How the counts are worked out

Words

A word is any run of characters separated by whitespace, which is how editors and most publishers count. A hyphenated compound counts as one.

Sentences

Sentences are detected at full stops, question marks and exclamation marks, so abbreviations can push the number up slightly.

Reading time

We use 200 words per minute for silent reading and 130 for reading aloud. Those are the usual figures for planning talks and video scripts.

Most used words

Common function words are filtered out, so the ranking shows your subject matter rather than grammar.
