A solid name for tools and services
.net started out for network operators. Today it reads as solid and technical, which makes it a natural fit for services, APIs, tools and communities.
A short, trusted name when .com is gone
Recognised everywhere
It's one of the original seven extensions, so nobody needs telling it's legitimate.
Better availability
Two and three-word names are still free on .net long after the .com has gone.
Reads as infrastructure
A good fit for hosting, monitoring, developer tools and anything that quietly runs in the background.

Common questions
Is .net worse for SEO than .com?
No. Search engines don't rank extensions differently. Content, speed and links decide.
Should I buy both?
Yes, if the name matters to your brand. Registering both and redirecting one is cheap insurance.
Can I transfer my .net here?
Yes. For $15.95, a transfer adds a full year to whatever time is left on the registration.
